Sick Notes

When you are on sick leave from work, the law states that you do not need a sick note for the first seven days.  After seven days you would need an official sick note from your GP.

Up to seven days your employer should provide you with a ‘self-certification’ form for you to declare your illness yourself.

If the illness lasts for more than seven days then contact your GP, who can issue you an official document – called a ‘Med3’ – as proof that you are ill.

If your illness lasts for less than seven days but you still feel that you need a sick note then you can request a Private Doctor’s Statement from your GP.  This will cost £15.00, which is a price set by the BMA (British Medical Association).  This cost can either be met by the patient or the employer, depending on the circumstances.

This note can also be used as proof that you have seen your GP.
